Where Are They Now Wednesday!
This week we’re featuring Melanie Kiss, Selkirk Class of 1995. During high school, Melanie participated in volleyball and softball, played in band, and kept busy doing stats for football, basketball, and wrestling. She was also her class salutatorian. She especially enjoyed history with Mr. Villegas and science with Mr. Reed, both of whom left a lasting impression.
Knowing where her life has led, Melanie says she would have loved a hiking club at Selkirk, though we think the beautiful landscape she grew up in may have offered plenty of inspiration.
After graduating, Melanie attended Carroll College and began a career in health information management. The healthcare field provided a fulfilling professional path and, for many years, opportunities to travel the world.
In 2021, Melanie turned her love of travel into something even bigger, launching Chicas Abroad, a women’s adventure travel business that takes women on life-changing trips across the globe. Travel is now both her passion and her profession.
Melanie has visited 43 countries so far, with many more on her list. Despite seeing the world, she proudly remains a small-town Pend Oreille County girl who loved growing up here and plans to stay rooted in the community. She is also the proud mom of Jocelyn and Morgan.
We’re proud to highlight Melanie’s adventurous spirit and entrepreneurial drive, proof that Selkirk graduates can explore the world while staying true to their roots.

It's Throwback Thursday! FFA was a new club in 1978, and these fine folks were founding members. Do you recognize them? Did any of them become farmers?

Levy results are in! At this point Selkirk's EPO Replacement Levy is passing at 54.81%! Next ballot count will be February 19 but there is enough positive margin that we anticipate the pass rate will remain above 50%, the required threshold. We'd like to thank the community for their continued support for Selkirk Schools! Where Are They Now Wednesday!
This week we’re featuring Amy (Johnson) Youngers, Selkirk Class of 2011. During high school, Amy was involved in volleyball and softball, while also developing a strong aptitude for math and problem-solving.
After graduating from Selkirk, Amy earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington, a challenging path she describes as difficult but absolutely worth it. Amy credits former Selkirk teacher Mr. Whittekind for recognizing her strengths in math, and encouraging her to consider engineering. Her interest in electrical engineering was also shaped by her early exposure to Boundary Dam, where her dad worked, sparking a curiosity about how large-scale systems operate.
Today, Amy works as an electrical engineer at Priest Rapids Dam for Grant County PUD. As the plant electrical engineer, she works daily in the powerhouse alongside electricians and operators, troubleshooting and maintaining critical equipment such as 350-ton cranes, 100 MW generators, 6000-amp circuit breakers, and 200 MVA transformers. Because much of the facility dates back to its original construction in 1959, no two days look the same—something Amy especially enjoys about her work.
Earlier in her career, while interning with Pend Oreille PUD, Amy designed the lighting system for the spillway at Box Canyon Dam. What began as a creative idea, suggesting color-changing LED lights, became a permanent feature of the dam. She still enjoys driving past on her way to Metaline Falls to see which color the spillway is glowing.
Amy has also remained passionate about outreach and inspiration. Noticing how many people she grew up with now work in power utilities, she helped organize a kids day at Priest Rapids Dam, giving her coworkers’ children the chance to tour the facility, run bridge cranes, and participate in hands-on activities. While not her most technical work, Amy considers projects like these among her most meaningful.
We’re proud to highlight Amy’s journey and the way her Selkirk roots, curiosity, and problem-solving skills have led to impactful work in engineering and public service.
